“The Blind Man Saw it All”
“The Blind Man Saw it All”
John 9:1-34
A. The eye is one of the most fascinating organs that God created.
1. An eagle has eyesight 4-7 times greater than a person. If we had the eyesight of an eagle,
we could read 3” high letters on a billboard a mile away. An eagle can see a rabbit moving
a mile away.
2. The average person blinks 12 times a minute that’s roughly 11,000 times a day. You
might think that we would wear out our blinkers.
3. A person’s eyeballs stay the same size from birth to death unlike a person’s ears or nose.
Only 1/6 of your eye is exposed.
4. An eye has more than 2 million working parts—seems hard to believe.
5. The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any
moment, day or night without rest. Our eyelids need rest, the external muscles of our
eyes need rest, the lubrication needs replenishment, but our eyes themselves never have
to have rest to function.
6. Evolutionists want us to believe that the eye is a product of chance. You know why we
have eyebrows? Keep sweat out. Why do we have eyelids? Keep dirt out. The eye is
recessed in a socket for protection. All that didn’t happen by accident!
7. On more than one occasion, Jesus the Great physician was a Great optometrist when He
opened the eyes of blind people.
B. In John chapter 9, Jesus the Great Physician was the Great Optometrist.
1. Jesus and His disciples were walking along on a Saturday when they saw a man born blind
and Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Who sinned this man or his parents that he was born
blind?” If you saw a handicapped person would you ask such a question so that they could
hear it?! Jesus said neither, but I am going to show you God’s work.
2. Jesus spit on the ground and He made mud. How much spit does it take to make mud?
And why did Jesus heal the man in this way? Answer is, we don’t know. Some have
suggested it was because God made Adam out of the dust of ground.
3. Jesus put mud on the man’s eyes, but he still couldn’t see. Jesus told him to go the pool of
Siloam and wash. This was a test of his faith. He did what Jesus said even though he has
no reason to believe. When he washed off that mud his eyes saw for the very first time!
C. Let’s note 3 principles from this text.
I. NOT EVERYONE WITH EYESIGHT HAS VISION.
A. In this story we have various groups of people that we will meet, but the only ones who could
see were Jesus and the blind man. Who couldn’t see?
B. The Neighbors couldn’t see.
1. Maybe we should give the neighbors some credit. No blind person had ever been sighted
before. And a person that had been blind and now saw would look a little different.
2. When the neighbors saw the blind man some questioned, “He’s the one who used to sit
and beg isn’t he”? Others said, “No, it’s somebody else who looked like him.” Here’s the
blind guy trying to break into their discussion saying, “I’m the one.”
3. It’s bad when you want to have a party and no one wants to celebrate with you. Why
didn’t someone say, “Isn’t it wonderful that for the first time in your life, you get to see
what your mother looks like, the sunrise and sunset, the blue sky and green grass?”
C. The Pharisaic Bureau of Investigation couldn’t see. (FBI)
1. Who were the Pharisees? They were a denomination in the Jewish religion. They were
ultra-conservative, religious people. They were teachers, they were self-righteous.
2. The former blind man was brought to the Pharisees who were sightless wonders too. They
were told that Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath day—a day of rest. They said this man
is not from God for He does not keep the Sabbath. They immediately discredited Jesus!
3. They had the audacity to ask the blind man, “what do you have to say about Him, since He
opened your eyes?” What did they expect him to say, “I know you think he shouldn’t have
done it, but since He did, I am sure happy to see!!!” They said, “Give glory to God”—tell
the truth.
a. Why didn’t they say, “Someone run down to 7-11 and get some sodas, cakes, and
cookies and let’s celebrate that you saw the sunrise for the first time in your life!
They didn’t believe it! It couldn’t be true because it was the wrong day!!!!!!!
D. Not everyone with 20/20 eyesight has vision.
1. Do you see the amazement that the same man who opened blind eyes will open our blind
eyes?
2. Sometimes you show people things in the Bible and they just can’t see it.
3. There’s a saying that goes like this, “You can convince a man of his will, but he’s of the
same opinion still.”
II. SPIRITUAL SIGHT CAN DISRUPT FAMILY BLINDNESS.
A. Let’s talk about the parents.
1. When he was a baby the mother probably said to the father, “You know, I think there is
something wrong Micah’s eyesight? They soon found out that he was blind. They had to
lead him around, they had to deal with their son’s physical handicap every day. For
whatever reason the man was a beggar—his parents saw their son begging too.
2. Perhaps they had accepted the fact that he would have to beg for a living the rest of his
life, but he was getting by and life wasn’t too bad, but Jesus changed all of that.
B. The blind man’s parents were blind too.
1. The FBI (The Pharisaic Bureau of Investigation) were knocking on their door wanting
to ask them some questions. They said: 1) “Is this your boy?” 2) “Was he really born
blind?” 3) “How does he now see?” They answered 2 of the 3 questions, when they said,
“yes, he’s our son and yes, he was born blind, but how he now sees, uh, he’s a grown man
ask him” because they feared the repercussions of identifying themselves with Jesus.
2. They had as much cowardice as their son had courage.
3. Why didn’t they say, “Whoever made our son see is okay with us!” OUR SON SEES!!!
a. His family gives proof that in regard to salvation it is every man for himself. One
might have thought that they would have stood by his side in this hour of examination,
but they left their son to stand by himself and face the FBI because they were more
afraid of losing their religious status than the fact that their son was now sighted.
C. Loyalty to Jesus comes before family peace.
1. The blind man’s parents were not willing to stand with their son no matter what.
2. Bringing the Light of the World into your family can really mess things up. (Like waking
a kid up for school on Monday by turning on the light.)
3. A young couple had been married for a year when the husband became a Christian. His
wife continued to live the party life. She said, “He liked me when we got married, he
doesn’t like me now, what’s the problem?” (Her husband was now in the Light.)
4. A lot of people are not willing to cast their lot with Jesus if their family is not with
them.
5. Jesus said in Matt. 10:36 “A man’s enemies will be the members of his household.”
III. WHEN JESUS OPENS YOUR EYES YOU SEE PERFECTLY.
A. Listen to the following testimonies of the blind man.
1. “I received sight.”
2. “I washed and I see.”
3. “One thing I do know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.”
4. “He opened my eyes.”
5. “He is a prophet.”
B. You see the past for what it was!
1. This blind man knew a whole lot less about Jesus than we do, but he knew what Jesus had
done for him no one else had ever done. He knew that Jesus had made his life much
better than it was! Regardless of all the religious junk that was being forced upon him—
He knew that. He knew Jesus has made things so much better for me!
a. If the 6 o’clock news would have interviewed him he would have said, “I like the light
better than the darkness.”
2. I heard a man ask another man, “What if you found out at the end of your life that this
story about Jesus is not true?” He said, “I know it is true, but even if it wasn’t I know that
Jesus has delivered me from alcohol and drug addiction and I am doing fine.”
3. When you have experienced Jesus’ salvation, you see how bad the past was and how much
better life now is! John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. I came
that you might have life and have it more abundantly.”
C. You see the future for what it will be!
1. The Pharisees turned the heat up the blind man and he was up for the task. They pressed
him to tell the truth about the whole thing. He said, “I already told you how he opened my
eyes and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to
become His disciples too, do you?”
2. They said, “You are His disciples, but we follow Moses.” He turned it right back on them
by saying, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and
yet He opened my eyes. If this man were not from God he could do nothing.”
3. Now the rest of the story. John 9:35-41 “Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and
when he found him, he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ ‘Who is he, sir?’ the
man asked. ‘Tell me so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You have now seen him;
in fact, he is the one speaking with you. Then the man said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and he
worshiped him. Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind
will see and those who see will become blind.’ Some Pharisees who were with him heard
him say this and asked, What? Are we blind too? Jesus said, ‘If you were blind, you
would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.’”
4. Luke 4:18 “He sent Me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the
blind.”
5. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.
CONCLUSION
A. Jesus is still in the ministry of opening blind eyes. Do you see?
“He Saw It All”
I was working in town one afternoon
Attending some business affairs
I heard a commotion a couple streets over And wondered.
What’s happenin’ there
A young man was running from in that direction
And stopped just to catch his breath
I asked him to please tell me what was the hurry
He smiled up at me and he said.
I was trying to catch the crippled man
Did he run past this way?
He was rushing home to tell everyone
What Jesus did today
And the mute man was telling myself and the deaf girl
He’s leaving to answer God’s call
It’s hard to believe but if you don’t trust me
Ask the blind man, he saw it all
Go ask the blind man, he saw it all
So my friend if the troubles and burdens you carry
Are heavy and dragging you down
You’ve tried everything you can possibly think of
There’s no relief to be found
That very same Jesus that altered the future
Of a blind man, the deaf, and the lame
Is still reaching out in your hour of trouble
One touch and you’re never the same.
You'll be trying to catch the crippled man
Did he run past this way?
He was rushing home to tell everyone
What Jesus did today
And the mute man was telling myself and the deaf girl
He’s leaving to answer God’s call
It’s hard to believe but if you don’t trust me
Ask the blind man, he saw it all
Go ask the blind man, he saw it all
He saw it all
